his disciples came unto him:

you, and shall say all manner of evil against you

exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so
persecuted they the prophets which were before
the believer. (Cf. Mk. 4. 21-23; Lk. 8.

shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but

shall break one of these least command-ments, and shall
teach men so, he shall be called the least in the king-dom
of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the
same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20. For I say unto you,
That except your righteousness shall exceed the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in
no case enter into the kingdom of hea-ven.

That who-soever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath

it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should

Whosoeyer shall put away his wife, let him give her a

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to
them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use
you, and persecute you;
45. That ye may be the
children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh
his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth
rain on the just and on the un-just.

Chapter 6 A.D.
Sermon on the
externalism in re- ligion condemned;
TAKE heed that ye do not
your alms before men,to be seen of them: otherwise ye have
no re- ward of your Father which is in heaven.
2. Therefore when thou
doest thine alms, do not sound a trum-pet before
thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagoges and in the
streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto
you, They have their reward.
3. But when thou doest

Father which seeth
in secret himself shall reward thee
5. And when thou prayest,
thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to
pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the
streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto
you, They have their reward.
6. But thou, when thou
prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy
door, pray to thy
Father which is in
secret; and thy
Father which seeth
in secret shall reward thee
7. But when ye pray, use
not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that
they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8. Be not ye therefore
like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have
need of, before ye ask him.
After this inanner therefore; pray ye: Our Father which art
in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

debts, as we forgive our debtors.

temptation but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
14 For if ye forgive men
their trespasses, your heavenly Father: will also forgive

19. Lay not up for
yourselves treasures upon earth,
where thieves break through and steal: .
20. But lay up for

22. The light of the body
is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body
shall be full of light.
23. But if thine eye be
evil, thy whole body shall be full of dark-ness. If
therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great

they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

or, Where-withal shall we be clothed?

things do the Gentiles seek:) for your hea-venly Father
knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33. But seek ye first the
kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things
shall be added unto you.

for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the
