9th of September 1836 Ralph Waldo Emerson publishes his influential essay "Nature" outlining his beliefs in transcendentalism. Leader of the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century, Emerson was a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society.

Transcendentalism a 19th-century school of American theological and philosophical thought that combined respect for nature and self-sufficiency with elements of Unitarianism and German Romanticism. A philosophical movement that developed in the late 1820s and 1830s in the eastern United States. It arose as a reaction, to protest against the general state of intellectualism and spirituality at the time.
