Binaural Beats

Post by JustAnotherFour »

It is often said that music comes from the soul. I think it is easier to understand when you look and listen to the impressions classical artists have left in history (Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 is a personal favourite). Particularly influential and inspired artists include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) to name but a few.

This was one of the first ever rabbit holes I delved in to. I wanted to know why music makes us feel the way it does. For example, when listening to music tuned to 432Hz, I have experienced some incredible emotionally charged moments with feelings of peace and euphoria. This is due to everything being in a constant state of vibration. The most elemental state of vibration is that of sound. Everything has an optimum range of vibration. That rate is called resonance and when we are in resonance, we are in balance.

However listening to music tuned at 432Hz is not something new. Ancient Egyptian instruments that have been unearthed, so far, are largely tuned to 432Hz. Within the Greek Eleusenian Mysteries, Orpheus is the god of music, death and rebirth. The keeper of the Ambrosia and the music of transformation, his instruments were tuned at 432Hz.

A Prussian meteorologist called Heinrich Wilhlem Dove has been credited with discovering binaural beats in 1839. ‘Binaural’ simply means ‘related to both ears’. They are a technique of combining two different sound frequencies in each ear to create the sensation of one frequency. Although there is no physical interaction between the frequency waves, your brain will still create an interference – the binaural beat. This is also known as brainwave entrainment.

Brainwave entrainment happens when your brain senses this third tone. It is created by the mathematical difference between these two frequencies. For example: if a 100Hz (pronounced “hertz”) sound wave is played in one ear and 110Hz in the other, the brain will perceive a new frequency of 10Hz. This can only be done by using headphones as each frequency must be received in your ears at the same time.

Brainwave states can be divided into four main categories: Beta waves, Alpha waves, Theta waves and Delta waves. A brainwave is a rhythmic pattern of neural activity in the central nervous system caused by the neurons in your brain communicating with each other. To view this, an EEG (electroencephalogram) is required. Specific brainwaves can be used to create different effects with one of the most interesting being the theta state. Present during light sleep and deep meditation, this state can also be referred to as the twilight zone and results in altered consciousness.

Found in the 4Hz – 8Hz range, usually we only find ourselves experiencing this state just before we fall asleep or when we are dreaming (REM sleep). Numerous studies show just how much theta waves can actually impact our physical well-being. Enhanced creativity, less brain fog and reduced stress are just some of the benefits.

However, theta frequencies can also help us reach a meditative state much easier therefore imparting mental and spiritual benefits. Some people say using binaural beats in this way is simply creating a crutch when learning to meditate. I disagree. By using theta frequencies at the beginning, I was able to reach a deeper meditative state faster and catch a glimpse of the inner self. It was helpful to see and know what the mind was initially capable of... it is possible that I may not have continued without seeing some quick results, therefore I hope this information may also be beneficial for others.

You know, this is interesting because I have been researching this topic recently.

Scientists say that everything, and I repeat, everything is made of wave forms. Music and sound in itself is organized sound and time in wave forms. So balancing a wave form with a specific type of Hertz (frequency) can alter anything in the human body.

This didnt make sense to me in the beginning. When I saw videos on YouTube that had titles of "headache relief music" I couldn't believe that such a thing exists. Although once I conducted more research, I realized that the videos were placed in a certain frequency that can balance pain. But how is this possible? Well once again, we are waves!

Compelling post. Much obliged for sharing!

You may find the science of CYMATICS to be quite interesting...
Even through the darkest days this fire burns always.

Sh3rl0ck, indeed, the science behind sound is amazing. You may already be aware but there are an endless amount of those types of videos on Youtube in pretty much all areas you can think of; healing, reducing anxiety, meditation, lucid dreaming, astral projection, chakra balancing, abundance/LOA, subliminal messages etc.

Not all are equal however. There are some paid audio tracks out there which are infinitely better quality than what you can find on Youtube.

Erek Shutter. Cymatics is a science that I have thoroughly delved into and it fascinates me. The connection between sound, vibrations and physical reality is what really kick started the path I am on now. I believe it can serve as a bridge to the unseen world and is something that the ancients understood very well.
