ELKOSH, ELKOSHITE A term used to identify Nahum the prophet responsible for a prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite which in turn probably refers to a place, however there is considerable debate as to where it resided in antiquity or where it is indeed located in today’s geography.

Nineveh , also known in early modern times as Kouyunjik, was an ancient Assyrian city of Upper Mesopotamia, located in the modern-day city of Mosul in northern Iraq. It is located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River and was the capital and largest city of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.




Holy Prophet Nahum (Feast Day - December 1)


Nahum the Elkoshite breathed forth words,
Of wounded longing sprinkled with myrrh.
On the first of December the living lament Nahum.


Nahum was from Elkosh beyond Bapareim, and a son of the tribe of Symeon. He flourished about 460 years before Christ. Following the death of the Prophet Jonah he prophesied and gave signs concerning the Ninevites, saying:

"Nineveh shall perish by sweet waters, and ascending fire;" a catastrophe that actually took place. As the river, which circled Nineveh, flooded the city after an earthquake, and effectively drowned it. And fire that came from the wilderness, consumed the highest point of the city.
Having prophesied these things against Nineveh, and after writing his prophetic book, which consists of three chapters, he rested in peace and was buried in his homeland.
The name Nahum means "comforter."

Notes:

Scholars have attempted to identify Elkosh with several cities, including the modern Alqosh of Assyria in northern Iraq and Capernaum of northern Galilee (the latter is thought to be named after him). The ancient synagogue in Alqosh reportedly contains the tomb of the Prophet Nahum, although Nahum's bones have been relocated to a nearby church.

Although several possible alternative locations have been put forward:

1. A site in Galilee called Elcesi. Jerome thought this was the site.

2. The site in Mesopotamia North of Mosul close to the Tigris River. Nestorius was the first to suggest this site. The so-called “tomb of Nahum” is found at Elqush north of Mosul.

3. A site in S Judah, probably Beit Jibrin between Jerusalem and Gaza. This theory has the merit that Nahum was apparently originally from Judah.

4. The site, but one doubted by most scholars, is Capernaum, the village of Nahum. This is the village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus taught frequently in his earthly ministry.

It should be emphasised that there is little solid evidence for any of these sites. Perhaps the true location is yet to be discovered?
