we were just children
eighteen and seventeen
five beautiful years
so many experiences
witnesses to our lives
we thought we'd get married
have children of our own
but i wanted ten
and you wanted one, maybe two
a picket fence and a dog
is what you wanted
but i wanted three sheepdogs
and you wanted a doodle
im still searching for my meaning
and i was your meaning
you went away for the summer
a retreat to refind your happiness
and while you were gone, i found mine
in myself
i didn't realize it was missing
i will always feel sad for the lost potential
but it was not a waste of time
i will remember us fondly
even as the memories of you fade
because you were my rose
and i watered you proudly
but i need to grow food for my soul
before i can water a flower
i'm a young man in my prime
and my heart's still filled with fear
leaving you to experience the universe is selfish
staying with you would be moreso
you probably hate me now
but you will find someone practical
on your wavelength
to watch dance moms and get icecream
i will find someone who can stargaze and skydive
i have eight more years of training
before the real learning begins
the world has so much to offer
and even though i miss our friendship
our companionship
our shared laughs and inside jokes
the secret eye contact across the table
late night drives
you falling asleep in my arms
we both know we're too different
we want the same things
we love each other
and probably always will
but i am a flawed human, as we all are
i will always yearn, but you yearn for contentment
i will never be content with you
and for that, i will always be sorry
but not regretful
i will never be regretful
