Spawn is the eggs and sperm released or deposited into the water, most fish reproduce by spawning.
Spawn consists of reproductive cells (gametes) of many aquatic animals.

The Russian Bear has been a frequently used symbol (generally a Eurasian brown bear) for Russia since the 16th century. It has been adopted in cartoons, articles and dramatic plays relating in different political eras spanning the Russian Empire, trrough the Soviet Union and the present-day Russian Federation.

Russians appreciate the bear for its raw power and cunning, and bears are very often used as mascots or as a part of a design in a logo.

Although Russian towns have been besieged by hungry bears, with shortages of nuts and berries driving the animals into towns in search of food, roaming the streets and scaring residents. The brown bear is mostly a herbivore, but its main problem is that Russian winters are long. Often a bear is simply unable to store up sufficent fat to support itself for five extended winter months, therefore dependent on circumstances it may well not bother to hibernate. When its natural habitat remained in a wild state the pine forests and walnut groves provided a stable food supply, thus the bears experienced fewer disruptions to their regular hibernation cycle . These days bears, both before entering a hibernation state and afterward during the spring famine, are more frequently forced to forage for higher calorie victims. Consequently they have begun to stalk, disable and devour wild boar, deer and and elk, although generally not full grown, and occasionally attack homo sapiens.

Many of the indigenous tribes of Siberia but primarily the Yakuts believe it is bad luck to kill a bear and will not do it unless it is absolutely necessary. And attacks not withstanding, strong bonds can be formed between bears and their human neighbours.

Clever Ants

After a flood, thousands of homeless fire ants pile on top of one another to build bizarro towers with
their own bodies-probably as temporary shelters. All the complex construction project needs is for
each individual to follow a few simple rules, new research says. And if the wriggling ant towers
weren't nightmarish enough, this discovery could help engineer robot swarms that are even better
at cooperating.

Wood ants putting up a defensive spray of formic acid from their abdomens against perceived attackers. Little children in Russia, and Finland dip sticks into anthills to douse them in the acid emitted, then lick the sticks, apparently 'it tastes nice and sour'.

Last meal of a newborn ichthyosaur revealed:200 million-year-old fossil shows the baby 'fish lizard' ate
squid.

A prehistoric squid was the last meal of a newborn ichthyosaur 200 million years ago, scientists have found.
The surprise discovery was made in the stomach of the smallest and youngest specimen of ichthyosaurs communis
or 'fish lizard, on record.
The fossilised skeleton of the predatory marine reptile is just 70 cm (27 inches) long and swam the world's
oceans while the dinosaurs walked the land.

Ichthyosaurs were a highly successful group of sea-going reptiles that became extinct about 90 million years
ago.
Often misidentified as swimming dinosaurs, these reptiles appeared before the first dinosaurs had evolved.
They evolved from an as-yet unidentified land reptile that moved back into the water. The huge animals,
which remained at the top of the food chain for millions of years, developed a streamlined, fish-like form
built for speed.

Scientists calculate that one species had a cruising speed of 22 mph (36 K high).
The largest species of Ichthyosaur grew over 20 metres (65 ft) in length, they appeared in the Triassic period
and grew up to 16 metres (52 feet) long, dying out around 25 million years before the extinction event that
wiped out the dinosaurs.

Ichthyosaurs communis was the first species of the ichthyosaurs, a group of sea-going reptiles to be properly
recognised by science, in 1821.
Universary of Manchester palaeontologist and ichthyosaur expert Dean Lomax said: It is amazing to think we
know what a creature that is nearly 200 million years old ate for its last meal.

We found many tiny hook-structures preserved between the ribs, these are from the arms of prehistoric squid,
so we know this animals last meal before it died was squid."

If there was such a thing as animal IQ which would rate in the top 10?

This assumes a direct cognitive ladder, from lower to higher life forms, with our own intelligence at the top.
But cognition takes different forms, often incomparable to ours. Are we less intelligent the. A squirrel because
we can't recall the locations of buried acorns? Brain size, tool use, vocabulary and soci learning are just a few
possible tools to measure animal IQ. There is no agreed test for measuring interspecies IQ.

One attempt to correlate animal IQ was made by Edward O. Wilson, a professor of science at Havard University's
Museum of Comparative Zoology.

He explained his system thus: '' I relied on the "encephalisation index", which measures the size of the brain relative
to that of the body as a whole and has been shown to be roughly correlated with intelligence." He arrived at a
top ten of:
1. Chimpanzee; 2. Gorilla; 3. Orangutan; 4. Baboon; 6. Monkey; 7. Orca; 8. Dolphin; 9. Elephant; and 10. Pig.

An alternative study looked at the concentration of neurones in the neocortex, the area involved in higher
functions such as sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought, and
in humans language.

The result here gave a very different answer 1. Sperm Whale; 2. Humans; 3. Killer Wahle; 4. Pilot Whale; 5.
Orangutan; 7. Chimpanzee; 8. African Elephant; 9. Gorilla; 10. Indian Elephant.

Another test measured intelligence with regards to self-awareness: the experimenter discreetly marks the animal
with a coloured dye.

The animal is then presented with a mirror and their reactions is observed. A self-aware animal will turn their
body to get a better view, touch the coloured spot or try to remove it. Using this, ten animals demonstrated self-awareness. They were 1. Human, 2. Orangutan, 3. Chimpanzee, 4. Gorilla, 5. Bottlenose Dolphin, 6. Elephant
7. Orca, 8. Bonobo, 9. Thesis Macaque, and 10. European Magpie. There are many more tests of animal intelligence.

Other creatures thought to have high IQ are giant octopuses, which can play, sovle problems, navigate through mazes
and have a respectable short-term memory. African Grey parrots can mimic words and express emotion, and rats
which have remarkable maze skills.

"Vampire Kangaroos" with FANGS survived five million years longer than previously thought- and used their
terrifying teeth to attract mates.

Fanged kangaroos-an extinct family of small fanged Austrailian kangaroos-may have survived at least five
million years longer than previously thought, a study found.
The species may have competed for resources with the ancestors of modern kangaroos, which may have
led to the fanged kangaroos di sie.

Despite the kangaroos large canines, the kangaroos were herbivores-but they may have used their teeth
to attract potential mates.

Researchers at the University of Queensland conducted a study about the evolutionary history of kangaroos.
A fanged kangaroo family, including the species 'Balbaroo fangaroo', were about the size of a small wallaby.
The new study into the kangaroos, which were previously thought to have become extinct 15 million years
ago, found that they persisted to at least 10million years ago.

The species may have competed for resources with the ancestors of modern kangaroos, which have led to
the fanged kangaroos demise.
The original hypothesis related to events during a change in climate 15 million years ago, but the fanged
kangaroos persisted past that time.

Despite the kangaroos " large" canines, the kangaroos were herbivores-but they may have used their teeth
to attract potential mates.

University of Queensland PhD student Kaylene Butler said the research involved analysing Queensland
Museum holdings of ancient fossil deposits from Riversliegh World Heritage Area in northwest Queensland,
where fossil evidence goes back as far as 25 million years.

"Fanged kangaroos and the potential ancestors of modern kangaroos are both browsers - meaning they ate
leaves - and they scurried, but did not hop," Butler said.
Northen Queensland was predominantly covered in rainforest when these fanged kangaroos first appear in
the fossil record.

"There is a lot of research to be done before we can be sure what their canine teeth were used for but some
have suggested they were used to attract potential mates'.

Heh well female centaurs are easy enough to imagine and have appeared in other media before. What Im developing is not a straight up copy of the creatures of mythology, I will modify it a bit anyways to make it my own.
Female minotaur might work too, they did put that in world of warcraft as well after all. They can call it Tauren all they like, but to me its a minotaur.

Result drastic reduction in the pollination of fruit, vegetables and nut crops and rapidly declining food supply for humankind and feeding habitats for creatures of the field. No growth debris to reinvigorate the soil with nitrogen.

Fish that change Gender


Blue Planet II viewers amazed as "transgender" fish dramatically changes from female to male then fights
the alpha for control.
The amazing gender swap wasn't all that captivated viewers when it came to the unusual-looking and rather
ugly species of fish.

The newly-made Asian Sheepshead Wrasse fish then went to challage the alpha male to a fish fight - taking
control of the group.
Sir David described what was going on, he said , "When any large female reaches a critical body size, she
can begin a dramatic transformation over just a few months, enzymes cease to work and male hormones
start to circulate in her body, as time passes her head expands and her chin gets longer."

A she has changed into a he.

He continues "And with this comes a change in temprement"
He adds "The old male who ruled all the females here is challenged to a face off, the more bulbous the head,
the more it intimidates an opponent."

Sir David also explained that only the largest females transform into males, but that when they do, they have
their pick of the females.

As one viewer commented "Now, THAT is what I call transitioning......

Long time ago I watched this show in England...It just came back to me how cool it was.
Need any information about this show...is it still running?...did it ever run on cable?... any possibility that is going to be on tv soon?

A Fish Called Wander

It has already given us a fish that eats birds and a fish that changes gender.
And Blue Planet II is set to get even stranger , by giving viewers a glimpse of a fish with a foot.


The unusual orange creature - called a sea toad - lives in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico and has
evolved to walk on the bottom of the ocean.
In footage that is likely to baffle fans, the bizarre fish was shown shuffling along the muddy sea floor
deep beneath Antarctica on its "stubby leg-like pectoral " before swimming off.

Sea toads, which grow up to 12in long, are found on the continental slopes of Atlantic, Indian and Pacific
Oceans at depths of up to 3,148 meters (around 1,96 miles).

Sir Attenborough, 91, says on the programme; "The sea toad...is an ambush predator with an enormous
mouth and infinite patience. This fish has been living for so long here that it's fins have changed into
something more useful - feet. They help it shuffle about on the sea floor."

Yet it was not the only "oddball" that the camera crews discovered hen they descended into the "final frontier "
that is 'The Deep'

In the deep waters off the Pacific Coast of America, they caught a glimpse of the barreleye fish - or 'spook fish
which has a transparent, jelly-like forehead. It has swivelling eyes that can face forward or look directly upwards
through its transparent, fluid-filled, dome-shaped forehead.

It is thought to filch the prey trapped by siphonophores that work the ocean like living drift nets.
The siphonophore catches prey by attracting it towards its stinging cells by flashes of light.

The barreleye picks up the flashes, and then drifts in and steals the siphonophore's hard earned meal,miss eyes
protected from sting cells by its jelly-like forehead.
