Land animals in modern Judaism are still only considered kosher, only when they both chew their cud and have split or cloven hooves. Therefore, while the rabbit does not have multiple stomachs it is not a ruminant, but it does 'rechew' its food. Thus it is known as Maalei Geirah which is a kosher sign, but does not have split hooves - which is why it is designated as not kosher.

Aha Glorian! The Crossed Keys Symbol....... just been restoring old masters to their rightful condition and came across your excellent piece of work.

Along with the city arms, the crossed keys is one of the most common symbols to be found on the streets of the city of York, in Northern England. The keys in question represent the keys to heaven, as held by St Peter, its traditional gatekeeper.

The reason behind the proliferation of crossed keys symbols appears to be the Liberty of St Peter - the area of the city within the walls that, in medieval times, was legally controlled and administered by the Dean and Chapter of the Minster rather than by the Lord Mayor.

There were walls that stood 12 feet high surrounding the Liberty. Entrance was through four guarded gates and a grassed and cobbled precinct lay inside. The area was dotted with various residences and official buildings, all dwarfed by the cathedral.

The Liberty encompassed the Archbishop’s Palace, the Dean’s house and other houses for the Canons, the Treasurer and the Precentor, who collectively made up 'The Chapter'. In fact a 'Treasurer's House' is still present on the site today. St William’s College, also within the Liberty was the home of the chantry priests, who were duty bound to say prayers for the wealthy dead.
