Atbash is a monoalphabetic substitution cipher originally used as an encryption of the Hebrew alphabet, which can also be modified for use with any known writing system with a standard collating order.

In cryptography, a substitution cipher is a method of encrypting by which units of plaintext are replaced with ciphertext, according to an externally devised but fixed system; in which "units" may be single letters (the most common), pairs of letters, triplets of letters, mixtures of the above, and so forth. The receiver, expected to be totally conversant with the fixed system employed, deciphers the text by performing the inverse substitution.

The Atbash cipher is a particular type of monoalphabetic cipher formed by taking the alphabet (or abjad, syllabary etc.) and mapping it to its reverse, so that the first letter becomes the last letter, the second letter becomes the second to last letter, and so on. The name derives from the first, last, second, and second to last Hebrew letters (Aleph–Taw–Bet–Shin).

An abjad is a type of writing system where each symbol or glyph stands for a consonant, leaving the reader to supply the appropriate vowel.

A syllabary is a set of written symbols that represent the syllables or (more frequently) moras which constitute words.

For example, the Atbash cipher would work as follows relating to the Latin alphabet:

A number of biblical verses are described by scholars as being examples of Atbash:

• Jeremiah 25:26 – "The king of Sheshach shall drink after them" – Sheshach meaning Babylon in the Atbash cipher.

• Jeremiah 51:1 – "Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against the inhabitants of Lev-kamai, a destroying wind." – Lev-kamai meaning Chaldeans in the Atbash cipher. (Chaldeans were a people that existed between the late 10th or early 9th and mid-6th centuries BC, after which it and its people were absorbed and assimilated into Babylonia.)

• Jeremiah 51:41 – "How has Sheshach been captured! and the praise of the whole earth taken! How has Babylon become a curse among the nations!" - Sheshach meaning Babylon in the Atbash cipher.

Much obliged for this response. I wasn't aware of the whole other side of information on this subject. I knew Kabbala and the ancient form of ciphers was used in old times, but I was never aware that it was even mentioned in the bible.
