Mackenzie’s Canadian Crossing
Alexander Mackenzie set off from Unjigah Peace River
It was Thursday the ninth of May seventeen ninety three
Our Scotsman followed rivers, Parsnip, and McGregor
Then tracking the Fraser he was told turn back you see
Chippewa country this, local Dalkeh say best overland
That’s the only way to reach the Canadian Pacific coast
Mackenzie went west, walked for twelve days to stand
At Bella Coola Gorge where he went in search of boats
He borrowed canoes loaned gladly by the local Nuxalk
Paddled down Bella Coola River onto the Pacific Ocean
With vermillion and grease wrote his name on a rock
Eleven hundred miles, quite a long exploratory notion
