I feel sure that if western nations did not have their current monumental all-consuming dependency on petroleum products, they would have little interest in Middle East regional politics at all!

Your final statement is fascinating in that in truth explains Western Hipocracy. Being a Christian and a European, I can firsthandedly admit that our war with the Islamic State is more than for Petroleum, however, the rest of our behaviours in the Middle East are indeed to keep a flow of Petroleum into Continetal Borders. However, it may be important to note that not everything is how it may seem and that the behaviours of great Nations may have another meaning than usual greed that corrupst the minds of men. However, as it appears now, our efforts are directed to Petroleum, however it also seems western Nations are fighting on a defensive against the Islamic State due to an apparent apathy.

Yes a thorny subject, with as you say, far greater implications than pure oil avarice, indeed global demand has done little to dent the overpumped glut and a variety of countries both Middle Eastern and otherwise havee been forced to discuss ceilings and reduced production levels.

However, the depth of feeling in France against Islamic State and extreme Islam has become almost atavistic in that they are seen as knocking on the gates of Paris. Seriously France has suddenly found itself in a delusion of deja vu stepping back to the Crusades. The country is now awash with such an overwhelmingly fervent desire to protect French national society against the violently invasive excesses of militant Islam, that the French people are on the verge of wishing that one amongst their elite would mimic Frankish warrior politician and superhero, Charles 'the Hammer' Martel.

Yes he who was nicknamed “the Hammer” because of his absolute defeat of the Muslim invaders at the Battle of Tours despite being hopelessly outnumbered and outtrained. While the invading Muslim army included thousands of veterans, Charles only had several hundred French farmers under his banner.
