Triskaidekaphibia is the fear of the number '13" the word derives from the Greek
meaning 'three' Kai and deka meaning 'ten' and Phobos meaning 'fear' or 'morbid fear'
fear of the number 13 and the avoidance of using it.
Paraskavedekatriphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th, Paraskevi ,Greek for
Friday or Friggatriskaidekaphobia after Frigg the Norse Goddess after whom Friday is
named in English.
It is said that some biblical events occurred on a Friday, the Great Flood, the confusion
of languages at the Tower of Babel, the day Eve tempted Adam with an apple and Good
Friday was when Jesus was crucified.
At the last supper Judas , the disciple who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th person to sit
down at the table, however the bible itself says nothing about the order in which the
Apostles sat, also the number 13 is not uniformly bad in Judo-Christian tradition ,for example ,
the attributes of God ,the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy are enumerated in the the Torah,
some modern Christian churches also use 13 attributes of God in the sermons.
There is a myth that the earliest reference to thirteen being unlucky or evil is from
The Babylon Code Hammurabi (1780 BC) where the thirteenth law is omitted, in fact
the original Code of Hammurabi has no numeration.
The translation by L.W.King(1910) edited by Richard Hooker omitted one article;
""If the seller have gone to (his) fate
(i.e,have died) the purchaser
shall recover damages in said case
fivefold from the estate of the
seller""
Triskaidekaphibia may have also affected the Vikings, it is believed that Loki was
the 13th God in the Norse list of Gods also Loki was believed to have engineederd
the murder of Balder and was the 14th guest to arrive at his funeral,this is
probably related to the superstition thT if 13 people gather , one of them
will die the following year.
Of course there are cultures and people in the world whom think 13 is lucky..
In Italy it's said to be lucky especially for gambolling, the number 13 is also
associated with the Goddess of Fertility, it also represents St Anthony, the patron
Saint of finding things or lost people.
In most Asian countries 13 is considered lucky too , the digit '1' when
positioned in tens sounds like the word 'definate'(shi) in Mandarin and
dialects such as Cantonese, while the digit '3' sounds like life, living or
birth.
In Thailand & India 13 is a lucky number and a lucky day too, in
Hinduism the 13th day is Trayodashi according to the Hindu calendar
this day is dedicated to Lord Shiva, usually. the 13th day of the month,
people who worship on this day are blessed with, wealth,children,
happiness and prosperity.
In New York Colgate Universary 13 men started building this with $13
on each of them and 13 prayers so it is considered a lucky number,
and the Friday the thirteenth is the luckiest day in Colgate University.
