"MAN'S INHUMANITY TO MAN MAKE COUNTLESS THOUSANDS MOURN"
On seeing pictures of Biafra 2-7-68
Dave Denison
I saw in the papers this morning
whilst eating my bacon and eggs,
a thin negro mother sat mourning
her kids with long matchsticks for legs.
And a felt a bit off as sat supping
I gulped down a pot of hot tea,
That lad with his big head sat cupping
boned hands to his mothers bent knee.
They hurt quite a lot did those pictures
the one with the kid on the breast,
Clinging tight as a permanent fixture
white teeth to cracked nipple hard pressed.
Then did it pass through my mind
for perhaps a split second or so
as I paused in removing some bacon rind,
did my thoughts to the Africans go?
And I thought of young children there lying
and I thought of the people so old,
of the hungry, the sick and the dying
of dead eyes, and of bodies grown cold.
It's all bloody wrong what they're doing
especially to young kids like that,
If there's a God in heaven they'll be rueing -
now what have I done with my hat.
