Another great physicist whose thoughts moved in a similar direction was Wolfgang Pauli.
At the end of the 1932 conference on nuclear physics in Copenhagen the participants, as was
their custom on these rare occasions, performed a skill full of quantum humour of which we have
already had a few samples. In that particular year they produced a parody of Goethe's Faust, in
which Wolfgang Pauli was cast in the role of Mephistopheles; his Gretchen was the neutrino
whose existence Pauli had predicted, but which had not been discovered.
