The Meaning of the E at Delphi

Pg 265

Plutarch wrote a fascinating essay entitled "The E Delphi", 1 actually in the form of a dialogue,
featuring Plutarch himself and several other speakers. It is to be remembered that Plutarch was a
close personal friend of Clea, the Delphic priestess of his day, and he knew much and always
sought to learn about the nature and history of the oracles not only of Delphi but elsewhere as
well. He was, however , most interested of all in Delphi itself, for he was one of the two priests
of Apolla there.

The central subject of the discussion is the letter E which was a prominent inscription
at the Delphic shrine. (That is , the letter E was carved in stone quite on its own
at Delphi ans was a subject of much curious speculation to the classical Greeks , who retained no
tradition of the meaning of the ancient inscription of this single letter.)

Delphi formerly also called Pytho, is famous as the ancient sanctuary that became wealthy as the seat of The Pythia, the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi in Ancient Greece who also served as the oracle, commonly known as The Oracle of Delphi, the oracle was considered the primary source of consultation on all important decisions to be made across the ancient classical world.

It was a widespread belief among the Ancient Greeks that Delphi was the navel (or centre) of the world, as represented by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi. An omphalos is a religious stone artifact, or baetylus - a word denoting sacred stones that were supposedly endowed with life. In Ancient Greek, the word omphalos translates directly as navel.

According to Greek folklore, Zeus sent two eagles across the world to meet at its centre, the "navel" of the world. Delphi occupies an awe inspiring site on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus, overlooking the coastal plain to the south and the valley of Phocis.

The Castalian Spring, located in the ravine between the Phaedriades ("the shining ones") a pair of cliffs, approximately 700 metres high on the lower southern slope of Mt. Parnassus which rise above the sacred site at Delphi, was the cleansing stopover for all visitors to Delphi. All comers made use of this spring including all contestants in the Pythian Games, and especially the pilgrims who had come to consult the Delphic Oracle stopping to wash themselves and quench their thirst. It was also the place to which the Pythia and the priests came to cleanse themselves in advance of the oracle-pronouncing process. This spring flowed toward the temple but disappeared beneath, creating a fissure which emitted chemical vapours that purportedly caused the oracle at Delphi to fall into a trance and reveal her prophecies.
