One day, a farmer lost his only horse. All of his neighbors tried to console him, saying "That's terrible. Just very bad luck."
And the farmer said "maybe."
A few days later the horse had returned, bringing with it wild mares that followed him. All of his neighbors came to him, saying "This is great, what amazing luck!"
And the farmer said "maybe."
The next day his son was training one of the new horses, riding it, and was kicked off and broke his leg. All of the neighbors came around and said "That's very awful, truly misfortunate."
And the farmer said "maybe."
And the very next day, the conscription officers came to town, looking for able young men to impress into service. They passed over the boy, because of his lame leg.
Do not presume to know what a misfortune may bring; you do not know the future. The universe is a chaotic and curious thing, constantly changing, and you may one day find yourself in a great deal of fortune out of something very unpleasant.
