A short synopsis of the information that I have gleaned on the subject:

Kind Regards Redbeck

The Apocryphon of John, also entitled the Secret Book of John or the Secret Revelation of John; a 2nd-century Sethian Gnostic Christian pseudepigraphical text attributed to John the Apostle. It is one of the texts addressed by Irenaeus in his Christian polemic Against Heresies, time-stamping the text as being written before 180 AD. It refers to the appearance of Jesus and describes the transfer of secret knowledge (gnosis) to his disciple John. The author refers to the timeline of events within the Apocryphon of John as having taken place after Jesus had "gone back to the place from which he came".

Only four copies of 'The Secret Revelation of John' appear have survived the ravages of time as of 2025, although there may be/have been others. They are largely the same in their basic structure and content. Although a notable difference between the codices is their individual length. The Berlin Codex and Nag Hammadi Codex III are shorter than the Nag Hammadi Codices II and IV. Another point of divergence between codices is the depiction of the Saviour/Christ figure. The Berlin Codex generally uses the term “Christ” more frequently, whereas the Nag Hammadi Codex III narrative often substitutes the term “Lord” or “Saviour”. However, the Nag Hammadi Codex III closes its text with the definitive prayer “Jesus Christ, Amen.” These differences could represent a degree of variation in the way that Gnostic cosmology was interwoven within a Christian context.

Scholars have designated up to seven hierarchical levels of authenticity relative to pseudepigraphical texts. These levels range from literal authorship written in the author's own hand, to the extremity of complete and blatant forgery as follows:

Literal authorship. A church leader writes a letter in his own hand.

Dictation. A church leader dictates a letter almost word for word to an amanuensis or scribe.

Delegated authorship. A church leader describes the basic content of an intended letter to a disciple or to an amanuensis or scribe.

Posthumous authorship. A church leader dies, and his disciples finish a letter that he had intended to write, sending it posthumously in his name.

Apprentice authorship. A church leader dies, and disciples who had been authorised to speak for him while he was alive, continue this practise by writing letters in his name years or even decades after his death.

Honourable pseudepigraphy. A church leader dies, and devotees seek to honour him by writing letters in his name as a tribute to his influence and in a sincere belief that they are responsible bearers of his tradition.

Forgery. A church leader obtains sufficient prominence that, either before or after his death, people seek to exploit his legacy by forging letters in his name, presenting him as a supporter of their own ideas.

The common law offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel were abolished in England and Wales by the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008. See also Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006.The offence of blasphemy was originally part of canon law created in England & Wales in 1378. Greater powers were sought and granted under King Henry IV in 1400. These new powers allowed the bishops to arrest and imprison "all preachers of heresy, all schoolmasters infected with heresy, and all owners and writers of heretical books." Given a refusal to renounce or a relapse post-solemn renouncement, then the heretic could be handed over to civil officers, to be taken to a high place before the people and there be burnt, a punishment that was designed to strike fear in the hearts and minds of others who might pursue the same path.
