Lannix dear friend, welcome back after such a long and winding sabbatical, where have you been pray tell? Obviously catching up with your awareness of love’s presence in your own life as well as a touch of spiritual transformation, for the book as A Course in Miracles (which is also referred to as ACIM or the Course) first appeared in 1976 claims to help you achieve exactly that.
Nevertheless, the tome has a chequered history I believe, but if you have found it uplifting then it has proved of great value. Remember beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and religious bigots as well as scientists can both prove to be remarkable cynics, unless the latter have achieved some degree of spirituality. As I understand it, A Course in Miracles was ‘scribed’ by Helen Schucman, who alleges that its content was conveyed to her word for word via an inner-voice-dictation delivered by Jesus of Nazareth. I personally do not dispute the concept of visions and inner voices from across the great divide, where that hypersensitivity exists within humankind.
For the benefit of other members of the Oracle Forum community, and I advocate that there is value in reading every written word, The Course contains a form of curriculum which if followed can bring about what it refers to as a ‘spiritual transformation’.
It is made up of three sections entitled the ‘Text’, ‘Workbook for Students,’ and ‘Manual for Teachers’. Written, or transcribed, from 1965 to 1972, some distribution of the work was done through photocopies prior to a hardcover edition being published in 1976 by the Foundation for Inner Peace.
A court battle over the copyright and trademarks, held by two foundations, resulted in them being revoked in 2004] following lengthy litigation because the earliest versions had been circulated without a copyright notice. Which in itself is not a recipe for inner peace.
According to researchers annual sales of the book increased steadily throughout the 1980; the largest growth in sales, and here’s where the dreaded capitalism creeps in occurred in 1992 when author and firm believer Marianne Williamson discussed the book on The Oprah Winfrey Show, resulting more than two million volumes sold. Yet any vehicle to spread a good and sincere word despite the fact that profit must be seen as well as heard.
Apparently, A Course in Miracles has elicited some extreme commentary as might be expected, ranging from ‘New Age psychobabble’ through ‘a Satanic seduction’ to ‘The New Age Bible’.
What is also well worth reading is Marianne Williamson’s interpretive work entitled, Inspiring Teachings on A Course in Miracles.
