Blake condemned the scientific trio of Isaac Newton, John Locke and Francis Bacon as sterile and materialistic. Here Newton the title of the work, who is expressed as an idea rather than as the subject of a portrait is seated on a rock cloaked in algae, with a compass to make calculations , like Urizen in Ancient of Days. The viewers decision on his location is left dangling..... bottom of the sea, a deep cave or a black hole?
