Milarepa was a Buddhist poet who was able to overcome the weights of his sinful past, and achieve enlightenment within a singular lifetime through sheer suffering and determination. His mentor, Marpa, ensured that Milarepa went to sleep every night wishing for death.

Only through suffering can one attain true knowledge, and true bliss and happiness. Choosing the path of divine knowledge over material knowledge is always a painful one, met with poverty and existential angst. Yet, the reward is tenfold for those who are able to hold on and maintain their faith.
