The elevation of the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun is 8,136 feet at the top. Located just above the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in the United States, it provides an astounding panoramic view of the Pikes Peak Region.
The 111-foot tall shrine was crafted from a single sheet of Cheyenne Mountain granite and completed in 1937. Constructed entirely without the use of nails and wood, it was bound together with 200,000 pounds of steel and 30 wagonloads of cement. The shrine has an entry gate with stone piers, an 80-foot tall observation tower and resembles a fortress complete with stone turret.
The shrine’s name derived from the illuminated angles of the tower that capture the morning and evening sun and the dedication to actor, philosopher and humorist Will Rogers following his untimely death in 1935 at the age of just 55.
